I never seem to be in a deep sleep at night. It takes forever to fall asleep and I feel like Im only half asleep. I wake up over anything. Get up several times in the night. Some nights I can't get to sleep at all. Tossing and turning and restless. The next day I am so tired at work that all I want to do is go back to sleep. I tried an OTC sleep aid and it worked one night, the best night of sleep i've ever had, and hasn't worked since then. Is there something wrong with me or something I can try.
I exercise, take vitamins, eat well, dont have caffine later in the day.

Try talking to your doctor about getting prescription 'sleep medication' ... I take an antihistamine (I buy the OTC generics) and take my 'hydrochlorthiazide' (high blood pressure/water pills) at night and I now sleep the night through ... and I've had 'chronic insomnia' my WHOLE LIFE. Don't take OTC 'sleep meds' more than once a month or two ... they are mostly just antihistamines mixed with analgesics, but you could be 'overdosing' on the analgesics or the antihistamines if you take them every night without your doctor 'approving' them for nightly use.
You also can 'help' yourself get to sleep if you develop a 'routine' ... at least an hour before bedtime, take a hot bath with 'lavender and chamomile' in salts, oil, or bubbles. RELAX while you are bathing. After the bath, get into your pajamas and sit in a good chair and 'read' something calming. At bedtime, make sure ALL of the lights are turned out, and ALL of the doors are closed ... you should ALWAYS check the 'outside doors' to see that they are locked, and also make sure the windows can not be 'opened' enough to let anyone into your home. At each place you 'check' you should say "That's good, I can sleep well tonight." When you get into your bed, turn the light out, and lie down comfortably ... if your bed isn't comfortable, then you can get something to make it more comfortable. If necessary, get the more expensive sheets with over 300 'thread count' ... or a foam mattress pad, or a new blanket/comforter, new pillows. Make your 'bedroom' your 'oasis' of rest and relaxation, a place where you DO NOT think about the 'stresses' of the day, or about what tomorrow could bring.
Last, get some good 'lavender lotion' to put on your hands, and some 'temple balm' with lavender that you can put on your temples and your 'pulse points around your head and on your wrists. Get a fabric bag full of lavender, or a stuffed bear with it's tummy full of the lavender, and when you go to sleep, put this where you can smell it as you fall asleep. You WILL sleep better with all of the 'lavender' ... and if you want, you can also drink lavender tea or lavender and chamomile tea ... both relax you and help you sleep ... but if you can find a good 'relaxing routine' for getting ready for bed, you will fall right to sleep after no more than a week (much less if you also take pills to help you sleep).
The last thing I want to say is that any NOISE can wake you up. If you have something to make 'white noise' ... some people use 'white noise machines' but we live near the freeway, and I open the window a crack so I can hear the cars whooshing by ... it's RESTFUL and it 'hides' the little 'creaks and groans' in the building (settling, but occasionally the downstairs or next door neighbors) ...
SLEEP WELL ... if you can RELAX then you are 3/4 of the way to a good night's sleep.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Hey Sarah..
You mentiion that you exercise. Try to vary what you do every 30 days. If you usually walk, maybe you could ride a bicycle for a month. Then, you could climb stairs or something else. If possible, it would probably be best for you to exercise in the morning. Give it a shot.

That use to happen to me until I tried this, if you drink coffee just drink coffee in the morning, make sure to do exersice or just walk for at leat 2 1/2 laps, make sure not to watch tv or be on the computer for 2 long, when you go too bed it is better if it is cold and you have socks on, it will make a more confortable sleep for you

It sounds like stress has taken over your life. Try to identify stressers in your life and reduce as many of them as possible.

Other things, like Yoga, meditation, relaxation techniques can help too.

There may be a medical reason. Talk to your doctor about it the next time you are there.

I don't believe that drugs are the answer long term.

If your excercising lots then I'm not sure. Sleep aids aren't something to be taken for a long term time so i'd consult your doctor.
