i don't want it to look crappy or half-assed. The tree is about 20 feet tall. I know how to hang them, using a ladder and long hook. I'm just not sure on how to position the lights so it looks nice at night. tight? loose? I really have no clue...

There are many ways to light a tree. Much of it will depend on the type of lights you are using and the capacity of the circuit you have operating them.

If you have an unlimited source of power and lights, then wrap the lights so that the trunk is completely wrapped from the ground up to the first fork and then wrap the branches.

Other ways include draping them horizontally as well as vertically.

Each looks great in their own way.

I have a huge tree and I drape mine vertically as I do not want to put 100,000 lights in the tree and use up all my power.

You can either do the bottom half, or the top half...if you have enough lights...maybe the complete thing.

included are some links of pictures!
