Wow this takes me way back. Not at all a job I'd want; similar to a chimney sweep.

First of all the residue from an oil burner should be cleaned out at least once a year. Not knowing at all what manner of heat it produces; Air or Steam; those mechanisms should be checked and cleaned as well, especially at the immediate delivery point.

The firing mechanism should be periodically checked and cleaned; pilot light; etc. as well as the delivery valve/system INTO the burner.

I'm not at all certain if even a cleaning service company ever checks a tank; but that too might be an option.
