Yes, you must calm down or you'll never find him. He's probably resting and has no idea how worried you are.
At night when it's dark, be very quiet and don't have the tv or cd player on. Sit and read. In time you will probably hear your pet running around the basement. He's not scared of you like a wild animal, so he won't be so hard to catch either.
Meanwhile, you can leave his cage with the door open. There's food and water in the cage; don't put any outside the cage. In time the hamster will probably come home, eat, and maybe even go to bed. If you can, try to rig the door to the cage so that it will fall shut after the hamster goes inside.
If you want to do more, sprinkle baby powder around the edges of the room and across any doorways. Then later, if you see footprints, you'll know where the animal was and maybe where it went.
Good luck. I know how this feels, I've had pets escape too.

believe it or not we would lose them in the vet hospital. they were good at getting out at night.
Just take an empty tissue box put some shredded tissue and some hammy food in it and put it in a quiet corner on the floor near the cage. You will find him in it sleeping in the morning. Don't worry if it takes a couple of days. A week is not unheard of!

I would put some of his favorite treats out to lure him out of hiding. Veggies, fruits, nuts- whatever he likes. He will soon get hungry, especially if he smells his favorite food! It is unlikely that he has gotten outside of the house.
