For a certain project, I am interested in the spread of CPU speeds in the past. Or, put simply: how fast were computers 5 years ago? Or 8? Does anyone know of any research that has been done? Also, answers out of own experience will help. Thanks.

Back in `95 , when Windows 95 first came out, CPU`s were running at 40Mhz and went up to 66, 75, 100, 133, 166, 150, 200, 233, 266, 300, 350, 400, and by the end of `98 they were running at 600Mhz. In 2000 CPU`s started hitting 800MHz. By 2002 they started at 1.4 GHz and in `04 the fastest pentium was at 3.0 GHz. Hope this helped.

Hi. I have many old computers dating back to a Timex-Sinclair 1000. My Dell Optiplex, probably 10years old, runs at about 90 MHz. My home built was originally based on an AMD XP 1600+ but I have it now running an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ at about 2.2 GHz. I will upgrade when the processor speed doubles again the 6400+ or higher. Just because its fun!

I remember in '98 when processors were topping out at about 350 MHz [1000 MHz ~ 1GHz].

Google it by searching "[year] cpu speed"

It should do the trick. =]

5 years ago, my parents bought me my first computer. it was a pentium 4 single @ 2.2 ghz and was a top notch entry level computer. 8 years ago, i would say probably at 1.6-1.8 ghz.
