Greece was the predominant early civilization in the western hemisphere, but it never interacted directly with the Germanic tribes that predated English. The Romans overran the Greeks and adopted many of their words and their religion as their own. The Romans eventually conquered and traded with the island that became England, and those people used Latin (from the Romans) with all the Greek that was still in it. Societies tend to adopt words when they run into new ideas that their own culture has not developed... the Greeks were ahead over virtually everyone in mathematics and philosophy, so those words especially remain Greek.
