I don't think any of you understand the term one-way assimilation. It can be constituted as a negative and cause racial tension. This method doesn't accommodate any other cultures beside one superior one.

uh...John, I know what one-way assimilation is. Trust me, I wrote a 10 page thesis about it. Look up the authors Shelby Steele and George Fredrickson. Fredrickson's essay is about 4 methods that "might" accommodate the many ethnicities in America. Which include one-way assimilation, ethic hierarchy, group separatism, and cultural pluralism. Thanks for your input though. It's highly appreciated!

Andy- What does Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have to do with what I am asking? Or me for that matter. Why did you even bring them up....uh..because I am black and you think I support them?
However, if you made a valid argument that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson promote group separatism, that would have made sense.

I don't believe there is such a thing as 'one-way assimilation.' Certainly, it hasn't happened in American history. New ethnicities come to America in waves of immigration. They become Americans in a geration or few, but what it means to be an American changes over that time, and some of those changes happen because of those new Americans.
Obviously, you're not talking a 50/50 thing. Immigrants aren't met halfway, nor should they expect to be: they have come to America to become Americans, not to conquer the United States and remake it in the mold of thier homelands.
When immigrants do form xenophobic enclaves and refuse to assimilate, no one benefits.

I'm not sure you understand what one-way assimilation is yourself.
When you come to this country (United States) you should make every effort to assimilate. The good part is that our culture is so diverse that assimilation is easy, if you try. If a US citizen like Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, or Madonna goes to live in another country then they should assimilate themselves to the local culture. It is not racist or negative. It just is.
The logic is that if you are fleeing or leaving a culture that has denied you opportunities for this culture, why are you bringing those parts of your culture with you.
For example, a person leaving Mexico with its culture of official corruption, high unemployment, and a semi-feudalistic system for this country. Why bring that lawlessness with you or why allow it by your fellow immigrants? That has never made any sense to me. Why bring the bad baggage with you? Leave it back where you came from.
I have to add that polls cite 70% of Americans are against illegal immigration. Since registered Republicans only make up about 30% of the population then logic dictates that what you describe is not confined to the Republicans contrary to your assumption.
Yes, I like Shelby Steele.

I believe that the the biggest problem isn't weather or not we should assimilate other populations into our country but more, that the people who are saying we are trying to assimilate them not really wanting to be amaricans. To me it is obvious that with the US illeagal imigration crisis the goverment is trying to include alot of poeple as being amaricans yet ultimatly have done little to nothing to deserve to be amaricans and some that had thier own countries not left them destitute would still be there. More and more it seems that the United States is turning into the homeless shelter of the world yet at the same time we do things that inhibit our own ablity to deal with the crisis we have made for ourselves. We have thousands of people trying legally and illeagally to get to this country to find work because the work offered is better then the work they could get in their own country yet we ship jobs from our country that has thousands of people trying to get jobs comming here to other countries. If we are not going to stop the flow of people to the united states the it is essental that we keep the jobs in the united states, otherwise we are simply going to turn our nation back to the state we were in durring the depression when there were almost no jobs to be found and those jobs that were available were in such high demand by the people looking for work that they will do the work at any price even for as little as a meals worth of food for an entire days work.

That explains the "If you're not white/Republican/Christian, get the f*ck out of 'my' country" bumper stickers I'm constantly seeing down south.
To answer the question, of course not. Anyone who believes so should be the ones to get out of America, which STANDS for freedom and diversity (see: Plymouth Rock, Ellis Island, etc).
That being said, I don't like America being turned into another country. The key word here is DIVERSITY, and with regards to illegal immigrants, that's hardly the case in areas they frequent when no one speaks English and the scene looks like you just fell out of a taxi in Mexico.

Kirk Spock gave a decent answer. As long as immigrants learn English and follow our laws I see no reason to care what skin tone they have or what religion they follow. Learning English and obeying our laws is REALLY IMPORTANT.

YES. America has ONE culture. While it is a culture that REFLECTS many diverse nationalities and religions, there IS an "American" culture.
What does it mean to be "American"?
We speak English.
We are Capitalists, not Socialists
We ARE (by overwhelming numbers) religious people, not athiests
We hold people accountable for PERSONAL CHOICES.
You are FREE to become a milionaire, or FREE to live in a box under a freeway... Your "life" is UP TO YOU, not the government.
We are PROUD to be "American" and TRUE american's aren't "Hypenated-americans". We're not African-Americans, Cuban-Americans, Italian-Americans.... REAL americans have NO OTHER ALLEGIANCE to other countries.... though we RESPECT our ancestry.

That said, I don't think they should print govt tests and ballots in 50 languages.

Do you mean immigrants who are minorities. It'd be swell if legal immigrants no matter who or where they come from would learn English.

Absolutely. If you want to come to America, be prepared to be assimilated. If you want your own culture and identity, stay away.
