Books!!
They have board books and soft-fabric books at all the bookstores. Some board books even have a little car with wheels attached. Nothing is better than reading to your baby.

Hi, how about personalized books? Kids love to hear their own name in the storyline. Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of titles like Sesame Street, Three Little Pigs, Teddy Bear Land, Ballerina Princess, Little Mermaid, Noah's Ark, Sports titles and so many more. Check it out - they're very reasonably priced, and make a wonderful, unique & special gift... It's something they can enjoy now and keep forever!! Good Luck!

A savings bond. I would be s/he already has a ton of toys and doesn't need any more. If you feel like only a toy will work, then an art easel, some paint, and paper is good. Playdoh and cookie cutters (you can get $100 for $10 at Michaels).

Maybe some nice blocks, some simple toys like those standard Fisher-Price baby toys... but I'm tending to think that a one-year-old is still somewhat too young for anything that would cost you more than $20. OK, hope this helped.

A savings bond for college, along with a small toy such as large, soft, toddler - safe blocks. Studies have shown that toddlers who play with blocks tend to have better math skills even up through college. There's no need to get the flashy plastic toys with the buttons and lights.

When a friend or family members child under the age of 5 has something to celebrate (baptism, Christmas, birthday) I always give them savings bonds.
That way when they are able to budget their own money and stuff they have a couple hundred already saved for a car or something they really want.

I gave my nephew a truck by little tikes that looks like a dump truck that they can learn to walk behind, then it is also a sit on riding toy later and a dump truck after that. So it is a toy that keeps growing with them. My brother then bought my son one for his first birthday and it is still a favorite to this day.

The gift of laughter. j/k
You could get your one year old a memory book. Which you could add photos and facts about first step, first words, favorite colors, friends . . .
Keep it until the kids old enough to appreciate it.
