Why protect the mallet part with your hand and shove it into the opponent or hit the opponent with the butt end? Wouldn't it be more devastating to actually swing it like a hammer and strike the opponent with the mallet part?

Try to hit someone with a sledgehammer like that and not hurt them. With the momemtum of the hammer you wouldn't be able to pull back. He does this so he doesn't hurt the opposition.
