Any time you or anyone else walks into your house, you could be bringing fleas in with you. They jump on your shoes, socks, and pant legs outside and then jump off once they get inside. They can then infest carpeting, upholstery, or any other hiding place that's not smooth (like a hardwood floor). If they are carrying eggs, they can lay their eggs and generate a whole crop of new fleas to infest your house.

you could have walked thru them and maybe had a few stick on you and then you brought them home.
fleas like to congregate around poop and if you happened to walk anywhere by some the fleas usually fly above it diving down for freebees. you might have come in contact and brought them home.
now you have to get rid of them.

If you or someone in your home has spent time outside, particularly in grassy areas, they could bring them in. Fleas don't just jump on animals.
