Every year, on halloween night, I see kids out there having fun, getting candy, dress up in cute costumes, You know what sucks, you look out the window, seeing kids having fun out there and you can't go out there yourself! Why? Because mother won't let you! Every year you cry, you can't have any fun at all, I ask mom why she won't let me go out, and get candy, and she's like "We're a Christian family, we don't celebrate it". I would tell her I'm not Christian, but she still won't let me go to parties, and dress up" Yes, It sucks. I know, I'm 17 now, and I still never went trick or treating, I would tell kids that, but everyone stares at me. They say, you suck, how could you not ever celebrate halloween, this is what being a kid is all about.!

I want to ask my mom, but I don't know how to persuade her. Am I too old for trick or treating, I don't want to miss out on all the fun. This is my last chance, to do this, to experience halloween for the first time!

How can I persuade her?

Is your mother aware of the Christian connection to the holiday?

For the Celts, November 1 marked the beginning of a new year and the coming of winter. The night before the new year, they celebrated the festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead. During this festival, Celts believed the souls of the dead—including ghosts, goblins and witches—returned to mingle with the living. In order to scare away the evil spirits, people would wear masks and light bonfires. When the Romans conquered the Celts, they added their own touches to the Samhain festival, such as making centerpieces out of apples and nuts for Pomona, the Roman goddess of the orchards. The Romans also bobbed for apples and drank cider—traditions which may sound familiar to you.

But in 835, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later all saints day) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallow’s Eve or “holy evening.” Eventually the name was shortened to the current "Halloween." On November 2, the Church still celebrates All Souls Day. Halloween itself is a Christian celebration historically and has never been anything else. Halloween is not Samhain. Today only a handful of neo-Druids would claim to celebrate Samhain and I don't think any Roman pagans survive who worship Pomona.

The purpose of the Hallows Eve feast, i.e. the giving and receiving of food on the even of All Hallows, is to celebrate those who have died in the Lord, whether they are officially recognized by the Church as saints or not. It is a celebration of the “communion of saints,” which reminds Christians that neither God nor the Church are bound by space or time.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that through the communion of saints a perennial link exists between the saints who have gone before and those who remain here below. Hallows Eve is a celebration of that communion of fellowship. So to claim, "we're a Christian family, so we don't celebrate Halloween is like saying, "we're a Christian family so we don't Celebrate Christmas" which like Halloween was also originally a pagan holiday since given a Christian meaning to celebrate the incarnation of God as Jesus Christ.

Sharing the truth with your mother may not make a difference since your interest is in partying, not in communing with the saints, but your mother's reasoning for saying no is flawed.

If i was in your position, and since im not too far of your age i'll tell you exactly what i'd do. Tommorow morning, wake up and act super super HAPPY, even make your parents breakfast, if they ask you why you're so happy say that you just had the best dream of your life. then explain to them how Jesus, (or God,ect ect) told you to live each day in joy and laughter with everyone you love, just make sure you act differently towards them. Then the next day, be really happy again, say you had the exact dream but this time you was hanging out with your friends and god was happy that you was having fun then say how real the dream felt, and how you woke up laughing, blabla. When you tell your parents about these dreams you keep having, hopefully there going to be delighted for you and even suprised. Then later on, get one of your friends to ring the house phone and ask you if your coming to get some sweets on halloween. Since your parents will have seen you so happy the past couple of days they'd be mean to hurt your feelings and make you upset. just look them in the eye and say, 'wow, being with my closest friends and getting candy how fun would that be?' If your parents like candy, this would be the part where you'd say 'oooh, you can help me open all the chocolate and candy later' and if you get any money say you'll donate them to the church or something like that. Thats what i'd do, Overall good luck, i'm sure if you convince your mum satan is the least thing on your mind when you think of halloween, you'll be fine!

This won't win the best answer, but it's the best one I have.

Read my whole answer - if you can get thru the lecture, then you MIGHT find a few pointers that MIGHT get your parents to let you go.

For starters - If your parents don't beat you, or otherwise abuse you and they provide food and shelter to you then they aren't bad parents. It sounds like they are attempting to instill a moral compass for you, for which you will benefit later.

Secondly - respect their position. When you are 18 you can move out, get a job, pay rent and go trick or treating.

Life would REALLY suck if your parents beat you or berated you or otherwise didn't care about you. So if you want to challange Mom, I suggest that you check the "life sux" attitude - you won't win with that lead.

Many Christians believe that it is wrong to celebrate Halloween. I respect their opinion but I don't agree. I am a devote Christian. We took my sons trick or treating every year and we had alot of fun. Today my youngest son is a Methodist minister. His house is decorated very goulishly and he will host a great party. So if he is destined to hell, I will be holding a spot for him there.

A wise man said "seek to understand so you can be understood". To effectively argue your position you MUST understand your parents objections - research the HISTORY of Halloween (Wikipedia is a good source.) Many Christians believe that Halloweens Pegan orgions mean it is anti Christian - (by the way the Christmas Tree orgionated as a Pegan ritial) - In MY opinion one must understand that Halloween today is more of a marketing holiday than a religious one. Both Christians and Devil Worshipers take a backseat to Madison Avenue.

I hope you have a civil dialogue with Mom & Dad - they are trying to teach you right from wrong and be greateful for their love.

AHH!! I feel bad but the truth is about Halloween:
It was invented by CHRISTIANS to ward
off Evil Spirits by mocking them with scary
masks, because they thought October 31st was
the day where the human world and the Spirit
world overlapped and that either could enter
each other's world.
And, God knows were not celebrating Halloween
so we can worship Satan! He knows we celebrate
Halloween because you get candy, and just
have a great time, like Jesus's Birthday!
Tell ALL of that to your mother, and maybe she'll let you.
Also, include, I'm 17, I'm going off to college next year,
this is my last chance to celebrate Halloween as a teen,
as a kid.
I am 13, and i am a very Strong Christian, and i celebrate
Halloween, and my mom approves and shes Christian
also.

=]] Good Luck!!
I'm so so so so so so sorry!
Confused.

explain your doing it to dress up with friends and get candy, not the aspect of the day of the dead, or the halloween part some people think of,
that its for the kid fun part and that maybe you could do some research and be like mom its not all about the bad or odd things people think about, try to explain you just want to have fun with friends nothing more than that

At our Church we have trunk or treat, Members have candy in their car trunk and the kids go by for treats and they have all kinds of games and fun.. It started as a celebration, look up hallow, and the pagans started using it for their holiday. Does your Church or school have any activities for you? Does your family just not answer the door or what?

Yes, sometimes life sucks, and it's better that you learn it now and it's not a surprise when you're older.

I had very strict parents, too. I couldn't date til I graduated HS. There was nothing to be done, except get a job, save my money and MOVE OUT as soon as I could. Just please don't go crazy off the deep end with your freedom like I did.

They aren't proving anything except their control over you. But don't let it twist you.

The fact of the matter...

You live in the states I'm guessing, a place full of crazy fundamentalists...er I mean followers of the great christian faith, tell her to relax and that you just want to have fun on a holiday like EVERYONE else, it makes me sick thinking of people going around preaching to others whats right when the fact is, nobody has a clue.

"I'm a christian" said with an american accent can send shivers down my spine - sheltered to the finest
