I don't know much about breeds but I'm looking for a rather large dog that is a protector but won't go out and just hurt strangers. Any ideas?? Thanks!!

German Shepard.
I grew up with three, my grandmother had two and before I was born, my mom and dad had two that were prize-winning K9's.

They are very loyal, very friendly with family and very protective and willing to please & learn (great for obedience).

Rottweilers their tough dogs but have to be trained well. I have one that is very gentle because I never beat it ,also play with it alot but trained it to attack when i say a german word otherwise it is just fine even around strangers,I always keep him on a leash though
as one day a stranger came up to us and the dog wanted to tear off his testicles the dog sensed something was not right with this guy and have never seen him act that way again and it's been almost 4yrs now, "trust the dog"

Any big dog can be trained pick one you like and get it trained. I myself love the breed Native American Indian Dog! They are big, they are beautiful and they are very smart, and Akita is a very good dog, Shepherds are good dogs Golden Retrievers are Wonderful dogs! When I had my first one he protected me the first day I got him and was a love to everyone in our family but some guy was running down the street and the dog thought he was a threat and he went into the defense mode and I was very surprised. Get a dog you like take him or her to training!

Doberman pincher are suppose to be great guard dogs while the German Shepard is an all around above average guard dog. This is why they are used by law enforcement. They are easily trainable and loyal

any breed of Mastiff. They are really nice, but will not let strangers in the house unless there master permits. They will not hurt anyone, they will just keep them at bay and will probably scare anyone that comes to the house to death, so you would want to make sure you tell friends about him/her before they come over

German Shepards are great gaurd dogs. They're really protective but not agressive generally. The only thing worth making note of is that they need alot of excersize so you'll need alot of time to take them for walks.

german shepard or alstation both are good protectors.. but it really depends on what you want protected, and, to what extent the of protection you want... i know a friend who is partially deaf and has a jack russel.. it barks and warns him when someone is outside his property... but if it's a guard dog you were thinking of then i deffo suggest the german shepard or alstation..
:)
