My friend Chrstnwr has the answer above. I would add that printing by itself did not improve the literacy rate. Education would still be necessary outside the Catholic church monopoly on learning.
The key thing is that messages and information could be printed in mass quantities that people of modest means could afford. News sheets such as the "Trewe Encountre" describing the Battle of Flodden in 1513 England provided current events. Much more importantly, in late October 1517 when Martin Luther posted his 95 objections to the corruption in the Roman Catholic church on a German church door, this message could be printed and distributed to many people to read for themselves. Luther followed up with a German translation of the bible which German speaking (and reading) people could also evaluate for themselves rather than hoping a priest was telling the 'Truth'. The Roman Church would torture and kill people for daring to translate the bible from Latin to a language people could read themselves, but the Church could never get their hands on Luther in the German principalities. Mass printing then allowed the bible to reach more than just the most wealthy, Latin reading people in Europe.
Dissemination of news and ideas to many people was the major contribution of Gutenberg and his movable type printing press. Average people benefited more than the 1-2% who were elite, privileged, and wealthy.

Johannes Gutenberg made an impact in the world and in literacy by coming up with the moveable type. Actual block printing was invented by the Chinese a couple thousand years before Gutenberg was born.

It helped to create more books, thus increasing the literacy rate. Books were also cheaper to purchase, too.

Without the moveable type, scribes would still be copying books by hand and only the wealthy would be able to afford them.

Unfortunately, his moveable type was used to print indulgences that were used by the Catholic Church to get money for more property and bigger churches (people would buy these little slips of paper, thinking they or a dead loved one would get a ticket to Heaven, which isn't true).

Go do some Internet research on Gutenberg's printing press and you'll see what I mean.
