That's when we planted ours, but I suggest you confine it to a pot. We had bamboo in our garden. It was lovely, but funnily our neighbours had differing ideas when it began to cover their gardens too;(. Bamboo is great when it's contained, but a nightmare when it isn't. Jerusalem artichokes aren't much better either....

Do you know what you are doing? Have you ever seen adult bamboo plants? Do you remember that Star Trek episode where they had these furry little creatures that were so cute, but they were born pregnant and multiplied at alarming speeds filling up the Enterprise with cute little creatures...that's bamboo.
The only way to contain bamboo is to take a metal strip fairly thick 12" wide and hammer it into the ground and surround the plants with it. Otherwise, they're going to take over any possible ground it can reach. If you don't go down far enough with the metal, the roots of the bamboos will sprout new plants on the other side.
I remember at the old church spending Saturdays trying to kill that stuff because it was in the wrong spot, planted by a former tenant, I guess. We'd come back next week, and there they were, sprouting up again.
If after reading this, you still choose to plant it, I wish you happy gardening.

Bamboo is a very tough plant and can be planted any time that the soil is in reasonable condition.
I have a number of different kinds of bamboo in my garden and agree that there are two types of bamboo: the clumpers and runners. Unfortunately, even within the same genus, there are species which behave differently.
Bamboos which have proved of the clumping type in my own garden are:
Thamnocalamus murielae (syn Sinarundinaria murielae); Phyllostachys nigra; Chusquea culeou.
Ones to avoid are Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' and Phyllostachys violascens.

There are different types of bamboo that grow in two different ways, clumping and by sending out runners.
Choose your plant carefully as if you get the running type then it will be coming up everywhere and your house will look like something out of sleeping beauty in no time. The clumping type are fine.
They also grow very well in containers.
This link will help you.

They should grow if containerised. Take care in which variety you select some are VERY invasive and in 3 years time will be halfway down your road!
