Oscars are great, but only if you have the room for them (75 gallons for a sigle one to be happy). Smaller fish that are great are African cichlids, they are very active don't get as large, and are so colorful they look almost like saltwater fish. Africans can be set up in 30 to 55 gallon tanks, the size just determines how many you'll be able to keep.

Corydora catfish are some of the best hardy fish. Plus, most tend to be cute <3
Another good fish I had were the rainbowfish: hardy and peaceful.
Some other good fish: platies, swordtails, and certain smaller tetras (diamond tetras, serpae tetras, black skirts, and gold skirts)

Salt water fish are harder to care for, although most are prettier. If I was choosing a freshwater it would depend on if you want aggressive and can only have one in a tank or nice fish where you can have several. It also depends on your tank size. I have a piranha and I really like it, but we can't put anything with him unless we want it to be chow.

I like the gourami fish...I have a dwarf and golden. They are in the same family as betta. there are alot of different kinds of these fish also. So far they have been easy to take care of. They are also interesting to watch.

I love guppys, there so colourful and easy to breed. You can selectively breed them in order to get specific colours and patterns. The best thing about guppy's is that before you know it you'll have so many babies you can sell them back to the pet store and make a profit from them

Betas are really pretty! I heard that it is the male beta fish that are the more colorful and pretty ones. The girls are more neutral (and brownish??).
My friend has a beta fish (I've had 2 before, too) and she named him Mr. Bubbles. Awesome name, isn't it?!

Where to start. I like bettas, rainbowfish, killifish, Congo and emperor tetras, denison barbs (although I have yet to keep them - they're on my personal wishlist), rosy, black ruby, and cherry barbs, puffers (only by themselves, not with other fish), dwarf gourami, loaches, corydoras, silver dollars, angels, guppies (blues & greens), and "freshwater" flounders (technically brackish).
If those don't give you any ideas, try one of these link: http://www.elmersaquarium.com/000tropfishcareguides.htm
