Not at all. As you may recall, Mattingly said publicly that he didn't feel he was ready to be a major league manager. I think the reason he decided not to return with the Yankees is because it is possible that Joe Torre has something in the works with either the Mets or Dodgers and wants Mattingly to join him.

It is also possible that some of the Yankees players are waiting to see where Joe ends up and then not resign with the Yankees and join him as well. Just my opinion.

No, Joe Girardi was the best choice of the three interviewed - he was National League Manager of the Year last year. And I say this as a Hoosier whow ent to school with a cousin of Mattingly's. and have always admired Don mattingly's ability and brains

Nope, he never had a chance. He was the only one of the 3 with NO managerial experience. Pena was AL manager of the year in 2003. All the dopey Yankees fans cared about was that Mattingly was a beloved Yankee, not that he couldn't manage his way out of a wet paper bag...
I wish they did hire him, i love how crazy the NY media gets when the Yank-mees are doing bad and with that goober as the manager I would have been guaranteed some fantastic headlines to laugh at in the morning!

Not at all, he was one of just three that were interviewed by the Yankees and the job is going to someone else. One person is going to be very happy and two others won't be so happy, life goes on.

He killed his chances by being hesitant about the position in the beginning. By telling friends that he didn't feel right stepping into the position is what killed it for him. He should have kept his mouth shut and waited for the team to play their cards. He would have been a shoe-in.
