Men are funnier, and even women agree (or at least the women who are being honest). It has to do with the type of humor that's dominant in the culture.
For example, right now the sarcastic brand of humor as well as the crude type of humor is what's "in." Crude humor in women is just too unlady-like for most people. Sarcastic humor in women doesn't come off right since people expect more trust in women, and sarcasm does not build trust.
In school, the class clown is invariably male.
Female comics on TV tend to fall into the trap of using "periods" and relationship type jokes, which are not always funny to men.
I will say that the funniest person I know in real life is my sister, but she has always been a bit of a tomboy :p

I can't believe a woman is asking this question, first of all. I'm actually the person that's always keeping people laughing around me. That goes back to when I got out of my shyness back in high school. Maybe you think men are funnier but it's a man's world and that's what you see on tv. I don't know but sounds like a good reason. Not that men are actually funnier.

Guys try harder to be funny & it's more accepted for guys to actually do crazy stuff to be funner. Women seem to be expected to be funny by laughing at the right kind of humor, rather than creating the humor itself.

it might seem that way because most guys "put themselves out more". one of the ways to draw a womans attention is with humor. another thing might be related to the saying "humor is pain", and guys get dealt quite a bit of pain... which we use as fuel for humor.
this is not to say that this is the only reason, or that there are no funny women. i'm saying that this may be one reason why it seems that way in media and in everyday life.

I'm pretty funny. Men tell me I'm funnier than the women they know. And I often wonder where all the funny men went to, just when you need one, you can't find one.
Generalizations by gender aren't funny at all.

In my experience they aren't. Sure, men tell more jokes. but women are often great at repartee and wit. My significant other informs me that men only tell interminable jokes because they are poor conversationalists. I think she may have something there. I'm not into football and often find the exclusive company of men rather boring.

I think women take things too seriuosly. We have too much empathy and let's face it, the funniest jokes are normally the meanest and most truthful.
I am a huge fan of sarcasm (for those of you that hadn't noticed). But they do say that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. As a Canadian I have a twisted and somewhat gross sense of humour.
To add to the list already started:
Ellen Degeneres
Kathy Griffin (the alltime funniest comedian including men)
Edit: Mutterhals, don't worry. If you don't fit in their 'normal woman' category then you must be a man. Take it as a compliment that you are not like them. There are a few of us out here that have been called men in frustration. I too find you to be a very funny woman.

They're funny because they like to watch their reflection and/or some other girl walking, which means they don't know where they're going. Then they have too be resourceful and explain why they appear to be idiotic when they didn't reach their destination on time, if at all.

humor is a faculty of a human brain that requires a very high intellect and ability to mix conventional and unconventional, reality and fantasy, irony and metaphor... I guess it has something to do with that...
