Bunker Hill is called by that name because it was fought at a place called Breed's Hill (strange, those Americans).

The Americans claimed a victory (and later named an aircraft carrier after the battle) because they lost the position, the front line troops ran away and reserves on Bunker Hill refused to go forwards with fresh troops and ammunition (they ran away as well). (Strange, those Americans).

Bunker Hill itself was of strategic importance because it overlooked Boston harbour and could threaten the ships bringing troops and supplies for the British garrison.

The British commanders underestimated the strength of the American position and used a very costly series of frontal attacks, when a couple of units sent up the coast to cut off the Americans from the rear could have captured the entire enemy force with relatively little loss - British troops relied on the bayonet at close quarters, while the Americans had not been issued with bayonets at the time and were petrified of closing with the redcoats (hence the hasty retrograde movement at the end of the battle).

the battle of Bunker Hill in Boston was the second decisive battle in favor of the Americans. the colonial forces under the command of general Putnam were barricaded at the top of the hill and the British forces had to march up the hill and shoot upwards while the Americans were firing downhill and were at a distinct advantage. after 2 or 3 charges by the British they gave up and retreated. the Americans had just run out of powder for their guns and if the British had made one more charge they would have won and changed the outcome of the war.the first decisive battle had been at concord.
