My son (eight months) is the same way. He's wearing 0-3 (some 3-6) month waist sizes and 3-6 or 6-9 month lengths. We use baby suspenders, overalls, and he's constantly in sleepers now that the weather's getting cooler. I really think that baby clothes manufacturers should make allowances for our long, lean babies!

I would try around with different brands. Old Navy cuts differently than Carters... Since your son is only 4 months, why not just keep him in sleep n' plays for the most part, or overalls? Unfortunately, most brands don't make pants with the waist adjusters until about 2T. There are no brands that make clothes in single month sizes because kids vary so much. (my 5 month old has almost grown out of 6-9 month size!)
You have a lot of other options since he's so little yet. Good luck!

I think it really depend on the brand. Just like adult clothing, the same size is not always the "same size." I find that my daughter can wear some clothes that are 0-3, 3-6, 6-12 depending on the manufacturers idea of sizes and some are longer or wider. Mexx does their sizes 2-4, 4-6, but their clothes are expensive. You could put him in a one piece outfit in 3-6 and that would probably just be a little baggy, or the overalls where you could adjust the straps for length.
Oh! Have you heard of baby legs? Check out http://www.babylegs.net
They are leg warmers for babies and children. (Don't worry, they are made for boys too!) You could use these under the pants that are a touch short so that his leg is not exposed.

I know what you mean. My son is only 1 month old and I have to put him in 3-6 month clothes sometimes because his legs are soo long but his tummy isnt that big. I just put him in sleepers (3-6). That way I dont have to worry about something fitting around his waist. Actual pants dont work out because they are too big around the waist. Just put your baby in sleepers (ya know, the ones with long sleeves and cover the feet and button all the way down) They make some that dont look like he is going down for a nap.

Gap has an adjustable waist band and may have it for babies, too. Check into that. Try a different store--they all have different sizes. Finally, I would suggest overalls. You can get him the bigger size and adjust the straps up. Also, put him in one piece outfits because those can be big and it's fine.

I had a kid like that, and I always dressed her in those one-piece outfits in the winter time. They were baggy, but because they were from shoulder to ankle, they stayed in place.

feed him peas and oatmeal (lots of carbs in peas and oatmeal) to thicken him up; try buying jogging pants and boots or BELTS
