I am having problems adding new hardware. For instance a memeory stick for my daughter and an mp3 also. The problem is that an icon comes up in the bottom of the screen says found new hardware and then the new hardware wizard programme comes up but will not install as cant find software. I run windows xp and i have tried all usb ports( 6)and they all work fine but it is getting really frustrating. PLEASE HELP.

Maybe the MP3 player needs a driver. Do you have a driver disk? The memory stick should install no problem and will be recognised next time you reboot.

hi there
the best method of installing hardware is to install the software that comes with the device and restart the p.c/laptop,then after the p.c starts up again insert the device and then run the "add hardware wizard" prompt that appears
the reason you were finding no software before is that it was not installed, even if the software was on the disk in your dvdrw drive, windows cannot find the drivers that way,it needs to be installed
so basically with all usb devices the method is this 1)install the device drivers/software 2) restart the p.c/laptop(were applicable) 3)insert the device to your p.c/laptop 4)follow the prompts when they appear 5)if required restart the p.c/laptop again
in the case of memory sticks you normally need no drivers for these, however they do come with security software such as v-safe which is a password protected login feature
mp3 players do require drivers and software is also used for uploading music and ripping data, however theres loads of other software thats compatible with mp3 player, including media player 11 which is free to download from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1d224714-e238-4e45-8668-5166114010ca&DisplayLang=en
any problems let me know
good luck mate !

Your memory stick will work, just wait a while. Your MP3, should need an installation disc. If not, go to Add/Remove new hardware and let it search, might get lucky.

Have you tried reading the directions that came with the Drive/MP3 player?

That would most likely solve your problem. Mp3 players often have specialized drivers that are needed to control the functionality of the device. There should have been a disk and instructions that came with it.

I would find the driver online for your particular bit of kit and install it yourself

Make sure you're signed on as an administrator or at least a power user, then try it again.
