Sounds serious, I would do a system check with an anti-virus program.

If it only does this while you are typing an email... it could be software related rather than hardware releated.

Try running virus / spyware scans etc... You might have one of them using a port that your email is trying to use and it is causing a confilict that the computer can't resolve.

Issues like this can be hard to diagnose because they can result from a number of issues. You might have a failing power supply or a dying graphics card. The only way to know about that is to swap them out for new ones and test the computer. If it doesn't solve the problem then take the hardware back to the store and get a refund.

Worst case... just take the computer in and have a proffessional look at it. They will have the tools to do the job right without suffering any accidental problems.

hi peter
this sounds to me like a malware or spyware infection,as when a virus hits your p.c it goes for e-mail accounts and any other parts that can cause maximum destruction
so the obvious solution is either reinstall windows to be sure of total eradication or run both your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs.however even after a virus scan theres still a chance that some part of the infection can be left behind and thats why i allways recommend a complete windows reinstallation,as this is the only way to be sure the infection is gone
another problem when a virus(or spyware) hits your e-mail account is if it gets to your address book then this will infect all the names in there, which will really annoy the recievers of any e-nails from your address book
microsoft have a excellent virus scanner called"malicous software removal tool" from http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx,this can be run alongside your current anti-virus scanner and will detect the most dangerous viruses around including the Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom viruses, and if any are found they are safely removed
after this you can then run your own anti-virus to clean up any traces left behind
finally to sort out the shutdowns try this, right click my computer>advanced>start up and recovery>untick the box "automatically restart",then click ok,this will stop any shutdowns in the future
any problems let me know
good luck peter !

The manual that came with the computer will show you how. If you dont have the one that came with the computer you can down load a manual from the computer manufacturers web site. They are usually different instructions for each model and manufacturer

It's not hardware.

It's likely malware. Use the Discover Tab above to learn more about malware.
