yes except it spelled c-o-u-p,it is the sudden overthrow of a government, often through illegal means by a part of the state establishment — mostly replacing just the high-level figures.
An example of a coup is Adolf Hitler in 1923.

A coup d'etat or coup, pronounced coo, is a government takeover. More specifically, a coup is one portion of the government getting rid of the top leaders.

Most of the time when you hear the term in movies, they use the term military coup. This would mean that the military attempts to take over the government.

I just have to correct dvruth. There was no coup when Hitler came to power in 1933 (NOT 1923). Ironically, he was voted in democratically. There might have been some 'persuasion' by Hitler's supporters aimed at getting people to vote a certain way but there was definitely no coup.

It is "coup" although it is pronounced the way you put it. You are thinking of "Coup d'etat" (Coo det-ah) which the violent overthrow of the government by a rebellious group.

It's french..... "coo" is a baby noise or a dove noise.
