what does the protagonist do in a story? why are they so important?

The protagonist is the main character of a novel- the person around whom the plot revolves.

Without a protagnist there's no story line and the literary piece then becomes mere words on paper..

The protagonist is the main character in a story or play. Without the protagonist there would be no story to tell.

protagonist- main character who has to face some sort of problem before the book ends can be solved or unsolved
antagonist- the person trying to thwart this

Protagonist is the main charecter, can be good or bad
Antagonist- person against main charcter, either good or bad

sometimes a person can be both protagonist and antagonist (IE, macbeth)
