they have to be well known people, even if it isn't for heroic acts. i want to stay away from political people because this is for a school paper and it would cause a lot of hassle.

Hero has a different connotation today. Used to be, you HAD to do something heroic to be one. Not just do what you are supposed to do...go above and beyond in some way, and so something truly difficult or amazing. Now, all you have to do is be popular. For some, Paris Hilton is a heroic figure. I can't imagine why.

Real heroes of today? I'd be hard pressed. Popular people who are our heroes? Michael Jordan; Michele Quan; sports figures of any kind...they are our heroes...all for tossing a ball through a hoop, or for hitting a ball over a fence. A sad commentary on our society.

Firemen, Policemen, Military people that do very dangerous jobs just because that IS their job. Mothers who work two jobs to take care of their children and still find time to take them to their games and school and be with their kids because that is what TRUE heros do. NOT for fame and glory but because they want to.
