You may want to tell your mom or an older female friend and ask for advice.

Clear to white discharge before getting your period is normal.
In general when your period starts it will not be heavy at first. It will be as spotting and may be dark brown (old blood) or deep red. Your flow will probably be pretty light your first few periods. You may feel cramps later.

As for feminine care products I have to say first that I Hate pads. I like tampons and cloth pantyliners as a back up or in between my periods.

But one thing about pads is that they are easy to use. You just sit down, peal a paper strip off the sticky back of the pad, press it into your panties pull them up and that's it.

You may want to get in the habit of carrying a couple of pads in your purse or book bag during the school day and maybe a change of underwear like dark panties.

Tampons may be a bit more difficult. Yes you can start using them from the start if the idea doesn't bother you and you don't have difficulty with using them. It's a little long to discuss here in this answer and you may have other questions. I'll explain for you if you want.

Congratulations on being a woman! :) I'm 15 and I started not that long ago too :) Good luck and please feel free to email me if you like. :)

Edit I forgot to say..for the first 1-2 years you are still developing a cycle so don't be suprised if you are often late or miss..that's quite normal. Also I find that starting late is not bad but I think I have a more heavy flow than if I started when I was younger.

Ask your mom, grandma, sisters, aunts how old they were when they got their first period. This is the best indicator of when you get yours.
When 'something brown was happening', did it last for a few hours or a few days? If it looked kind of like rust, that was probably your first period.
Your second period will likely be a full blown one, with bloody discharge for several days. You may or may not get cramps.
Duration, amount of flow, and amount of cramping also seems to run in families.
Your period may not regulate well for the first year. Time to start carrying pads in your purse or backpack.

The one day when you had the brown spotting would be considered a period. The first ones are usually very light and don't always come on time. There could be many reasons why you are starting so late (most girls start between the ages of 11-13), genetics, low body weight, stress, and, of course, pregnancy. Keep your feminine products handy as you will start to see more normal cycles in the months to come. You can count your blessings that you started late in life - you will now have about 30-40 years to contend with this monthly nuisance!

The brown thing could've been a period, it could've come late. If you've had sexual intercourse AFTER the first brown thing, you could be pregnant.
If you haven't had sexual intercourse since the first "period", and it hasn't shown up for a month, it probably wasn't a period.
Be patient though! People get their periods as young as 10(I was 11 when I got mine)to as old as 16-17!
Don't worry about it much, you're really lucky you don't have to deal with the period side-affects and such.
A factor is, if you have a little of body fat. You have to have at least a small percentage of body fat in order to have a period. If you don't have ANY body fat, you will not get your period, so consider that.

That is a good indication that you will get your period soon. You might want to just carry the needed items just in case you get it when you least expect it. (it has happened to all of us at some point) Some women get just that bit of brown at the start of there period. Try not to worry about it and just write down the date then next month you can see what happens:-)

That brown discharge was your period. The reason it was brown is because the blood wasn't fresh. It will take some time to get regular, that's why you haven't had another one. Don't worry.

Welcome to womanhood.

everyone gets it at a different age. It also depends on how active you are. Female athletes may get theirs late. You can always ask your doctor what an average age is. Don't be in too much of a hurry cause once you get it, you're stuck with it! Haha

you'll get your period when you get your period. Especially when you are young and just starting, sometimes you just aren't regular. If you are cramping, you could just be ovulating. Just relax and don't worry about it. But always be prepared just in case!
