There are several qualities of character and knowledge needed.
1. Knowledgeable of people in general, not just their own class of people where they were raised. The United States government is based on government by the people for the people . The President should be able to represent the many working class groups as well as all the professionals that provide the services that the populace uses. By understanding and being able to represent people from all walks of life the President should be able to do his job better and gain more respect.
2. Professional. The President should be skilled in and knowledgeable of the laws that govern and provide for Americas's wonderful and democratic way of life, and should be able to show an interest in upholding those laws. Honesty. Integrity. Respect for people from all walks of life. All these things are necessary for a successful President.
3. Able to see the big picture. The President should have the foresight and presense of mind to guide the nation through peaceful times as well as turbulent and troubled times. When times are difficult, a gifted President would be able to lead the country and weather the storm. Then, when times are peaceful and prosperous, this President would also be able to lead skillfully leading to greater prosperity, and anticipate and deal with any future problems.

I think a successful President needs to be honest, shrewd, and open-minded. If the President can work with people of different political philosophies to pass just, well-thought-out laws, he or she will be remembered fondly for generations.

Tell you what just do the opposite of Bush and Cheney and you got it made in the shade. Don't have corrupt White House and don't lose all this money and don't do anything Bush has done, okay. Then you'll have winning hand.

Reasonably smart -- it's just not a good idea to have a moron in office.
Some integrity would be nice for a change.
Someone who's a good judge of people, a people reader, if you will.
Someone who genuinely wants to make things better for people; and who is capable of listening to reason.
Someone who can think on their feet.
in no particular order....
