A couple of changes that have intrigued me over the last few years are things like skincare being specifically targetted to men, the rise of the metrosexual and now the ubersexual.
The turn around seemed to start in the 90's with the SNAG - Sensitive New Age Guy but perhaps I am too young to remember what came before that.
But those are a couple of topics you could concentrate on.

For background, coming from a traditional "macho" point of view, listen to the Howard Stern Show and google Jimmy Kimmel/the Man Show/Maxim Magazine/Details, etc. Or go into to any corner dive bar in your city for some real answers to your questions.
Regarding the changing notion of masculinity, maybe look up clothing designers, hair/makeup artists [men in non-traditional male roles]. Sorry kind of vague answer. Good question.

Focus on how men have changed in society in the past 20 years or so...like involvement in the household more and child raising,
as well as career opportunities that are offered thru out society,
non traditonal careers for men,and the impact of the economy in
average households and incomes..good luck!
