They usually rot from the bottom. Look at the bottom of the pumpkin for discoloration (kind of a loss of orange color). Also feel the bottom of it. If it's getting soft, it's rotting.

It will be soft. Maybe not the whole pumpkin but certainly the area which has started to rot.
I normally put straw under my pumpkins as they start to grow to keep them off the damp gound.

the rotten part definitely starts getting very soft, and then dark colored.
