Okay well my mom was trying to print some things last night. the printer started making noises like it was choking on something. When I opened it up the band that the cartridges run back and forth on was coming apart. It had all these inky strings hanging off it. Needless to say we couldn't print anything else. I was wondering if this can be replaced and if so is it cost effective? Our printer is an 880 HP Desk Jet.

Okay now that my printer is officially dead any sugguestions for a new printer. Maybe something that someone owns and they like? I'd like something low on the price range and maybe with a scanner.

Sorry. You had better call around to get a price on repair. I'm sorry to say that I have found, at least in my case, repair is not cost effective. Last call I made wanted $70 to look at it and I get my printers on weekend specials - $59 - $79. It hurts, but sometimes we just have to dump them -- but don't dump until you call a repair shop or two.

Nope. It's not worth replacing parts on this unit--it's too old. However, there are a lot of very inexpensive (even new) printers out there (about $50). I have a couple that I got for free when I bought a couple monitors at Frys. Check your local Craig's list. Consider that printer manufacturers are selling INK--not printers.

It may cost more to find and replace that driving belt than getting a new printer. There are many HP models available in the market now...

Will NOT be cost effective to repair, if it is NOT under warranty, simply buy a new one.

Sorry
