The term is also applied to one of the nine sister-goddesses of Ancient Greece who were sort of patron-saints for branches of the arts and sciences. "Terpsichore" (Terps-i-koree) was the muse of choral song and dance and the word "Terpsichorean," which is an adjective applied to dancing, stems from her name. When used in this sense it is capitalized - Muse.
