I would say Living Colour. Corey Glover had one hell of a voice.

Great question. Great answers so far too.

The Pixies, even for just a couple more records. You figure the Frank Black stuff (and Joey Santiago was with him for the first couple records) was really great. The Breeders are great. I can only imagine what would have come next if they could have gotten along.

Following the Kim Deal train of thought, but with the Pixies being dead, The Amps were really awesome and only put out one record. Although, aside from the lack of Kelley Deal, I'm not sure what real differences there are between the Amps and the Breeders (especially since even the Breeders are Kim Deal and a constantly changing supporting cast).

Elliott Smith. That guy's sound was evolving really nicely, brilliant songwriter. Every record was distinctive and special in a completely different way. It just sucks.

I agree, Nirvana too, I really wonder where their sound would have gone with age.

I'll probably think of more. I'll come back if I do.

Under the assumption that Fugazi is done (I only passed on mentioning them initially because I keep hearing rumours here and there about there being a new record someday) they are quite possibly at the top of my list. In a poll I took here recently I kind of found myself on an island with the opinion, but as much as I am a fan of their whole sphere of work The Argument is by far my favorite album of their's. That record is WAY too good to go out on. It's kind of funny, you want the groups you like to end on good efforts, but sometimes (particularly in their case) a record is just too good to be your last one.

This won't mean anything to anyone outside of Ventura, CA but there was a group called Phooey in the mid 90s that only released one album and one e.p. that were really great. Unfortunately they broke up over a record deal that split the band because the singer turned it down without consulting the group. I really wonder what they would have put together if things had gone the other way. Great group, put on a really great show.

I have a few of them:

1. Sublime (Damn that heroin)
2. Blind Melon (again...damn that heroin)
3. Rage Against the Machine....though they may be getting back together.

I bet Bradley Nowell and Shannon Hoon are shooting up together in Heroin heaven right now.

Given2Fly - ahh yes, how could I have left out Layne? He's definately at the table with Brad and Shannon.

I'll 2nd Living Colour, Vernon Reid and Muzz Skillings were excellent players, and add Badlands. The combination of Ray Gillen's powerful vocals and Jake E. Lee's guitar was extraordinary. It's a damn shame that Gillen died and Lee pretty much went into seclusion.

An honorable mention goes to Brother Cane.

Living Colour would be a good choice because they are great, but I think they are still around. They released Collidescope in 2003 and have toured since then. I know right now, the members are doing solo stuff, but I haven't heard that they threw in the towel yet! So my vote goes to Jimi Hendrix. I know this is probably unfair since he died, but he was only playing from 1966-1970. Can you imagine if he was still rocking out today?

Vote #3 for Living Colour. Corey Glover does have an amazing voice, and Vernon Reid is a virtuoso on guitar.

Mother Love Bone would be my second pick. Andrew Wood's death was such a shame.

Boston - fighting with record executives lead to only 3 albums. Brad Delp had one of the greatest voices ever.

Guns and Roses - Axl's arrogance..they could have been the 90's Zepplin.

The Police - only 5 albums in 6 years.....what could have been!
