Ran an anti-virus program to remove it. AVG is a god one. You can get the free version of it at http://download.com (There is also a paid version, so search for AVG Free)

It is possible that the infection may not be a virus, but a different type of harmful program called a "spyware". AVG (and most other virus scanners) do not clean spyware. You need an anti-spyware program for that. While at download.com also get a copy of Spybot Seek & Destroy. That should clean any spyware.

If after that, you still appear to be infected, see if you can give any other details (symptoms, file names, etc) that will help to indentify the virus, and we should be able to tell you how to clean that specific one. Unfortunately, they all are cleaned differently.

Put it in the virus vault(contained it in a place where it wouldn't hurt the rest of the computer).

If it had gotten really bad then I just wiped the hard drive and started anew, then re installed all of the programs and other things that I lost.

personally unless its a low level spyware type virus they cause damage ... i learned a long time ago to keep the system backed up with an imaging application ... blocking a virus is one thing ... after you are infected with an actual virus damage WILL be done and a reformat may be necessary if u dont keep ur system imaged regularly ....
