The earth will last as long as the sun does. When the sun dies, so will earth. We people might not last that long, but should we become extinct, other life froms on the planet will survive and so life of one sort or another will last with or without humans.

Global warming is not going to destroy the earth. It will simply lead to a mass extinction and make human life harder.

This is important to understand because we humans care about time scales of tens of years, hundreds of years, at most. The process global warming is setting in motion won't be over for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years... that is how long it would take evolution to replace the lost species with new ones.

We can't afford to wait until global warming has run its course and nature has "fixed" what we have done to the planet. By the time that happens we will be geological history.

And in this sense global warming is an absolutely anthropocentric problem. Whether we like it, or not.

Beyond that Earth will have an ecosphere for another billion years or so. Plenty of time for life to do a couple of do-overs and certainly nothing we have to worry about either personally or even as a species.

About 5 BILLION years.

Global warming is going have have essentially zero impact on the Earth itself .. Humans might find it uncomfortable for a while, but the whole system is self correcting .. (it's been HOTTER than the worst GW projections in the past).

If the 'doom & gloom' merchants are right & GW is caused by pollution (and not cows f*rts) then as soon as enough humans die off, the pollution will stop and the world will return to equilibrium.

i heard that what we consider to be 'earth like conditions' namely those compatable to human and other life, will only occur for about 1/10th the total life of planet earth.

lets use that 1/10th as a model for speculation

the earth is approximatly 4.54 billion years. We also speculate that life was up and running about a billion years into that. so we know conditions have been ripe for life as of about 3.5 billion years ago. also we know the sun's lifecycle thus we know when the earth will be destroyed, approx 5 billion years from now.

that means of the total 9.54 billion year lifespan of the earth, we already have experienced 'life compatable conditions' for over 30% of its life. so i guess whoever said 1/10th was full of crap, as we have already passed that mark!

the earth will probably be habitable for at least 9 billion years.

the category 'geology' or 'environment' is more useful than physics i think. for your question.
