we can forget about that ever happening because there are thousands upon thousands all over the planet and if we got rid of ours, people would just threaten us with with nukes and we wouldn't have anything to defend ourselves. It looks like the next person/country to lauch a nuke will start armageddon

Not much. Pandora's box is pretty tough to close once it's been opened.
The current concept of a few nations having the capability and no others being in the club is probably the most desirable. Mutual threats are always a good deterrent.

()perhaps we could get the nuclear missile owning nations to agree to cut all their stockpiles over time while preventing anyone else from doing it. ()
Of course, that's what they already did do.
I pray we have another chance to complete those promises. It seems any irrelevance increases the chance of them never following through... see you in the next world.

Come up with a weapon which is as destructive and portable, but non-nuclear. Other than that, no weapon has ever been taken out of use unless it has been replaced with something else.

Nothing, won't happen! And if, there are at least 40 nations, which could build one again in 1 week (All European Nations, Japan, Brazil, China, Pakistan, former USSR states, India, the list is long).
