That's because animes are usually different from their mangas. The creators of the manga and anime did this because they probably wanted them to be different. What's the point of watching the anime and reading the manga when they are exactly the same? When they are different, the company gets more money.
Oh, but good choice in watching and reading CardCaptor Sakura. I'm watching the anime and I'll probably read the manga after I'm done watching the show.

This actually happens quite a bit as a manga or or anime adopts to different sources.
Sometimes its the authors choice, sometimes its because you can get away with more in manga than you can in anime and the manga ending won't get by, sometimes the producers get involved and want to change things.
There are so many examples of this I can't even think of them all. Rounin Kenshin (extreme!), Girl meets Girl (so different, they are basically to different things with similar characters), Nana 7 (ditto), Negima (the first changes so much, they had to create another one!), and more besides.

It happens all the time...when translating the manga to the anime they usually make things different or cut things out.
It's the same concept as the books to movies, when you read a book then watch the movies they usually have lots of differences

Many anime does this. In fact don't ever expect it. In fact it is very rare, to find an anime ending exactly like the manga :)
