I've been reading some views about the victims of hurricane Katrina and the destruction of New Orleans when the levees broke. I believe there are good and bad people everywhere. I also understand that some of the residents of New Orleans had lived there all their lives and knew of nowhere else. Others had no cars or means of transportation to flee in time, while others blindly decided to wait it out because they did not believe destruction would follow. Why are some people on Yahoo still beating the victims? Why are so many people so cold and heartless, and insist on blaming these people? How do we know that this couldn't happen to us as well. How do we know that these people were not trying to do the right thing? Why are so many yahoo people implying that New Orleans people deserved to suffer?

I don't. But, I view the local officials of Orleans Parish with complete and utter disdain. Almost 400 transit coaches in the NORTA system. Not one was used to evacuate people from the lower Ninth Ward. A mayor who decampled to San Antonio to ride out the storm. A Water and Sewage Board which received nearly $500 million in Federal funds over the previous years to repair and renovate the levee systems for the canals and no one knows where the money went.
It can't happen where I live because we elected and appointed competent officials. Those who betrayed that trust have been sent to prison. I live in Clark County, Nevada.

there are some facts about katrina victims that may never be known. One of the conjectured ideas about them not leaving, is that they were waiting on welfare checks. Others are that the mayor and governor of LA, were in a fight over who was doing what, and the school buses and other assets that could have saved lives were not marshalled and sent to those who would care to leave. the truth is, much is muddled and it is going to probably be decades before much is known, and many of the survivers are elderly and their stories are not going to be told.

as katrina hit, new orleans was only one of many places hit. Many along the coast in other places are still destitute while resources are poured into new orleans.

my own opinion of the put down is that any area has its own tempo, its own heart beat. You move that to another area and the folks just don't always get along, causing friction...this is not always the case but can be.

you need one or two to committ crime and they whole lot of refugees is labeled bad news. Just the way it is.

I think the issue is more about the "victim mentality" that was displayed (and to a certain extent is STILL being displayed) by many (not all) of the New Orleans residents. They just sat and waited for someone to take care of them. Contrast that to other areas that were hit by Katrina...and lately the fires. The people didn't wait for big government to take care of them...they pitched in and started working to save themselves and each other.

That's the criticism...it's not a question of that they should have suffered, but how they reacted to the tragedy.

I would never "put down" a true victim of Hurrican Katrina...

But I think a GREAT deal of complaints come from the fact that the Governor of LA and the Mayor of NO failed to do enough BEFORE the storm (years and hours before) which raised the death-toll and displaced.

ALSO, I have serious gripes with the number of "faux victims" who stole millions and millions of dollars of aid.

I also blame the City of New Orleans itself... failing to take action on decades of Corps of Engineer reports.

And, just FYI, it HAS happened to me three times: Northridge Earthquake, Oakland Hills Fires, and Typhoon Mistsu... each time I was displaced and either lost my home or lost use of it for 5-6 months. I live again in California, and am again in an earthquake and wildfire prone area... but I'm MUCH better prepared (and insured).

I ALSO happen to love the "DAY & NIGHT" difference in behavior and reaction of the victims of NO and SoCal.

Is it ever going to be over? How long are the people in New Orleans going to milk it? How long are the liberals going to milk one hurricane? I don't care about those people and that place any longer.

I just noticed a distinct difference on how people behaved in N.O. with all the looting and at the Astro Dome / convention center compared to the recent fires in CA....It was like night and day. I'm not judging the good people in N.O. either.

Oh they would be singing a WAY different tune if it was them in new Orleans watching their house flood, or in California watching their house burn to the ground.... they are just bitter and blame people for no other reason except to gain attention.

Probably were teased in high school or they dont have any friends.... its all about the need to feel special and wanted.

I just ignore... you should too, because we are better then them.
