I live in a NYC apt in an old building that has steam heat. BR is about 13X17 w/10 ft ceilings. I need a humidifier that will really make a dent, as I get terrible respiratory infections from the dry air. Does anyone have recommendations?

You need to purchase a humidifier that is suitable for your apt. This will be more purified moisture and better for you. Putting water on a steam heat will not help you. A machine will keep better track of humidity and generate when needed. good luck.

If you have radiators you can place containers (like large coffee cans) filled with water on the radiator and they will provide humidity. I have used this method on oil or wood burning stoves and it did quite well. You may need several containers for a large room. Give it a try.
