Back in the early 60's my mother and her friend Michael were walking through Earls Court tub station, when a man came up to Michael and asked if he was gay. Apparently Michael thought for a second or two and finally replied "Erm yes I'm reasonably happy, thank you, you?" The man tutted and walked away.

That's not what it says on Wikipedia. Webster's Ninth College Dictionary says "happily excited; merry; bright colors. Or as Ren & Stempy say, "happy happy joy joy".

That is what it meant in old english. Now in modern english it means that you putt from the rough i think. I dont know how eliminating the pitching wedge can cause happiness. but whatever...

It does mean happy, but nowadays its used to describe people like me, homos, dykes, lessers, etc etc... i wish it still meant happy though. Just so you know though I am both gay and gay!

not any more as popular use of the word has changed it somewhat if you are in your late 20's to early 40's you will most likely think of the word as meaning homosexual if you are in you teens to early 20's you may think of the word as meaning rubbish as the popular use of the word is changing again
