You need internet security. You should invest in Antivirus with Firewall. That way nothing can install on your computer with out you being alerted. It may also rid you of some of the ones you have already been infected with as well.

instead of doing online scans, the best thing to do is purchase something like norton or spysweeper. (norton to scan files for viruses and spysweeper to eliminate adware and malware) They work really well.
Also, if you use any type of file share (limewire, kazaa, napster, etc), those are actually files you are retreiving from another unknown user, so its very easy to piggyback files onto the ones you are downloading and its even easier to simply name the virus file the name of what you are looking for and you willingly download the file. If you are searching those sites, beware of files that are ridiculously small. Such as if you are looking for a song file, it'll be more than a megabite. So, if there are song files that are about 2kb, its probably just a virus shrouded as a songfile.
And, unforutnately as someone already pointed out, **** is the most notorious for viruses, so if you are being bad, be more careful!
Also, never, ever click on those spam emails you get or those ads on myspace. Those myspace games may be fun to click on and then you can just close the popup afterwards, but sometimes they can log your IP address as having "expressed interest" since you volentarily clicked on it.
Lastly, make sure whatever email system you are using has an automatic file scanner when you download files from emails (like Yahoo Mail does). Just because the forwarded joke email came from yoru best friend doesn't mean that didn't realize that they were forwarding the viruses, too.

Often the on line warning that you get for viruses are false, and an attempt to get you to purchase someones "anti-virus" software. Especially if the warning includes a web site to purchase the anti-virus.

Go to http://download.com and get two free programs. The first is AVG Free (there is also a paid version, so be sure to search for the Free one). Install it and it will clean any viruses, then protect you from future ones.

Then also download Spybot Seek & Destroy. It is an anti-virus program that should remove any "fake" virus software you have on the PC. It should also clean any other spyware programs. However, unlike AVG it does NOT guard against future infections. You have to go in about once a week and run the program to keep the computer clean.

What ever you do completely ignore all these adds on websites that are like "Ur system has a total of 78 viruses click this and well sort it for you" or something of the kind. Usually all they are is spy-ware (things that record yoUr passwords etc ...). If ur looking for a free virus and spy-ware deleter thing i recommend "spybot search and destroy". it is quick and it does just a good a job as any of these latest ones like Norton ..... What i do is after using my computer i set a full system scan off, barely takes any time at all and my computer runs fine. Hope i helped you out !

first of all, you need to run a good anti-virus software(as everyone's suggested)...if things still don't help...then re-installing the OS(windows) is a good idea...immediately after this...install a firewall(sygate or zone alarm, i use sygate) and an anti-virus(i don't use any)...at the same time, start developing a healthy surfing habit...and this "does not mean not surfing pron(had to make that spelling mistake)"...it means that you do it in a smart manner...first of all, never just click on pop-ups of any kind, never click on ads, even if something catches your eye or it's something that you need badly, do a search rather than click on an ad...always keep a check for ur PC or laptop response time...if it suddenly becomes slow(has happened with me a couple of times) then there is a great chance that something is being installed in the background...good option at that time wud be to hard-boot ur pc...

monitor ur pc activities...thru ur firewall software, allow access to only those applications that need to access the internet...and this can be done on a trial and error basis...so apart from ur browsers, IM and P2P, quite a few of the windows application need to access the net...at first, block them with the help of the firewall, notice what happens...if everything runs fine, then let it remain blocked...i use sygate personal firewall and everytime any application tries to access the internet, it pops up requesting me to take action...so either grant access or block it....

i use this software called Net medic to monitor my network activity...it's just a screen that displays the network traffic(internet and LAN) on ur pc...so at times, if i'm not downloading or uploading anything, and still the graphs show activity, then i know that somethings surely wrong...so try to stop it by hard-booting or removing the network cable etc...

another software i use is Cacheman XP, that monitors the applications that are open at any point of time and displays the RAM usage...i use this to check what are the applications open...and in case i notice something that i don't recognize, i try to investigate and if it's something that's really not required, i kill the process...again using trial & error method may be helpful and also improve ur knowledge...

Again, you can avoid all this by just inculcating, in yourself and those who use the pc with, healthy surfing habits...

If you are getting such things while browsing websites they are likely to be advertisements. Few advertisers show an adjusted pop-up which tells you that your system is infected and clean it now, etc. Do not fall for them, they are likely to be scam.

Get an antivirus instead of downloading their software. I would suggest AVG Free Antivirus from
http://free.grisoft.com/
and browse safely ;)
