How Long is a Chinaman, not a piece of string.

A piece of string is as long or as short as it is cut. If this has puzzled you for ages, then you have too much time on your hands.

The answer is...no, sir.

This is an old joke. I first heard it, many times, as a Plebe at the U.S. Naval Academy.

It is a play on words, specifically Chinese names. How Long is supposed to be a Chinese name. In which case the answer is clearly "no, sir" because How Long is not a piece of string. And, this really is not a physics question is it?

Don't know what you mean - assume you are just playing. However, it is an interesting question just the same. You can stretch string. Also, it's made up of woven fiber. So is its length the simple quantity a child would mean or is it more - also can it vary and if so what's its "true" length - hmm - what do YOU think?
