I have a tank with 2 swordtails, 2 plattys and 5 guppys. My female swordtail ignores the male and shows far more interest in the male platty's. Is it possible for the two species to interbreed.....will i have mutant baby fish?...help!

They are two different species (contrary to another poster). Swordtails are Xiphophorus hellerii while Platies are Xiphophorus maculatus. They are very closely related however, and can interbreed, though it is strongly discouraged because it produces worthless mutants. If this "forbidden love" continues any further, separate the Platies from the Swordtails to avoid undesirable fry. Email me if you have any questions.

The swordtail is a variation of platy, they are not two different species. Therefore it is possible for them to successfully mate. With all platy births a number of fry will be disfigured, (R selection) this is normal. Good luck!

Depending on the color of the swordtail, you can come up with interesting color combinations. Let 'em go at it! You may come up with a new breed.
