The inquisitive mind of a child"

Why are they selling poppies, Mummy?
Selling poppies in town today.
The poppies, child, are flowers of love.
For the men who marched away.

But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy?
Why not a beautiful rose?
Because my child, men fought and died
In the fields where the poppies grow.

But why are the poppies so red, Mummy?
Why are the poppies so red?
Red is the colour of blood, my child.
The blood that our soldiers shed.

The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy.
Why does it have to be black?
Black, my child, is the symbol of grief.
For the men who never came back.

But why, Mummy are you crying so?
Your tears are giving you pain.
My tears are my fears for you my child.
For the world is FORGETTING AGAIN.

That is so sad but so true the young today don't bother remembering. I am 39 and always support i wear my poppy even my car has a poppy sticker and a large poppy on front. Remembrance Sunday i go to my local cenotaph and pay my respects. I think it has to do with my upbringing and the problem today is the young parents aren't instilling it in to their children but surely they should soldiers are still dying lets not forget that . We should all be thankful to them for giving their lives for their countries. God bless to them all.

That's a beautiful poem, I'm printing it out :)

My Great-Grandad fought in WW1.
My Grandad lied about his age so he could join the Army in WW2 like his 4 brothers (1 of whom was killed 3 days b4 his 21 birthday and is buried in France).

Epitaph for the Unknown Soldier :
To save your world you asked this man to die,
Would this man, could he see you now, ask why?

For the Fallen :
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
(Laurence Binyon 1914)

Ok that's it I'm crying again and I can't keep blaming my hormones :(

Well said my man, I will be donating generously. Having been to the military cemeteries in northern France and in Kanchanaburi in Thailand (close to the famous bridge on the river Kwai), I never fail to be choked by the sheer number of men lost and the average ages of them. It's a debt we can never repay but that doesn't mean we can't try.

Thankyou very much for that I lost a Great Uncle in the Second World War and his grave is in Normandy, one day I will get there to see it for myself.

Lovely Poem. We must all remember the recent past and why we should never let it happen again.

That is so sad. And true to life today. People need to support our soldiers and veterans. They paved the way for the life we lead today.
