The main character was a kid, and he turned into a purple monster. The monster was short, purple, and fuzzy. He was really strong and, at one point, held onto the bumper of a car and stopped it as it tried to speed away. I could swear the song "Monster Mash" was playing in the background.
I first watched it in the early 90s I believe, and it was live action.

Some statues made the kid start turning.. and he would change into the monster when he was hungry.
