The Patriots destroyed the Redskins 52-7 today, and as you might expect with a final score like that, there are some folks saying the Patriots ran up the score.
One of those folks is Redskins linebacker Randall Godfrey. According to Tom Curran of NBC Sports, Godfrey expressed extreme displeasure to Patriots coach Bill Belichick after the game.
"I said something to (Belichick) after the game," Godfrey said to NBCSports.com. "I told him, 'You need to show some respect for the game.' You just don't do that. I don't care how bad it is. You're up 35 points and you're still throwing deep? That's no respect....
"You look at all the great head coaches ... I'm just disappointed," he said. "You gotta show some class, show some respect. Joe Gibbs? We wouldn't have done that. Bill Walsh? You wouldn't see those types of guys doing that stuff. I've never seen nothing like that. Most teams, you get up like that you sit on the ball and try to run the time out. They're up 30-some points and they're throwing deep. That was blatant disrespect. I hope we can see them again, definitely. You don't see Joe Gibbs doing that. You can't even imagine that kind of stuff coming from him. Joe Gibbs. Bill Walsh. Bill Parcells. This isn't like college going for power rankings. This is the pros you show some respect, show some class."
In my view, the reason Belichick should have called off the dogs earlier has less to do with sportsmanship than with long-term strategy. Is it really worth risking an injury to key players to keep them on the field when leading by more than 30 points? I shudder to think of the outcry if Tom Brady tears an Achilles dropping back to pass with the Patriots up big late in a game, but that's always a possibility.

very good point, just stop them on defense like sportscenter said you would, don't cry to the coach or media. gaffney must of not been thinking about his position but his speech at the end of the game.

Can all these people who think running up the score is wrong, just stop the nonsense already. I am not even a Pats fan but.
This is a team vs team sport.. The purpose of this game is to win by OUTSCORING your opponent. Of course they should try to score as much as they can. If I were the head coach of the Pats,I would have them trying to score up until the last second of the fourt quarter. I dont know why so many people are getting on the Patriots for this, when you see college football games every single weekend, that end up being 60 point blowouts. I dont see anyone yelling at them that they are running up the score.. Also, dont forget that people pay tickets to see a full 4 quarter football game. That means that fans spend there hard- earned money to watch a full game without anyone not giving 100%. .
Not to mention, that the Redskins came into this game as having one of the best defenses in the NFL, and the Patriots needed to make sure they scored. I am a die hard Bucs fan, and I dont even like the Patriots, but they did nothing wrong

At least here you post a substantial argument for taking starters out, which the Patriots did do after the first drive in the fourth, injuries. Well here is the bottom line, if you pull starters every week in the third quarter what kind of shape will they be in to play a close game in the fourth quarter some week that they need to. Put simply, you just dont do it. Godfrey needs to stop his crying. It is not Bill Belichick's job to stop the patriots offense, its his. You cant blame someone for your inablility to do your own job, period. How much does Godfrey get paid? How much does Joe Gibbs get paid? How much does Springs get paid? They know what their job is, they cant complain to Belichick for their incompetence to do it.
Final thought, Joe Gibbs scored plenty of points late in a Superbowl that had a final score of 55-10, what does Godfrey have to say about that?

Gibbs scored a touchdown on the Broncos with a 35-10 lead and less than 2 minutes to go in Super Bowl XXII. The Redskins get what they gave out.

It's the NFL... the objective of the game is, to score as many points as possible, while the opposing side tries to stop you. Apparently the opposition, isn't trying hard enough, or is not prepared enough. Whereas the Patriots were trying very hard, and fully prepared.
If you don't like the way things are going, write to your team's coach, and tell him, you want them to prepare better, to play better ... let them know where you stand.. don't make excuses.. they lost because they didn't get the job done.
It's not pee wee football.... grow up and take your lumps.

All of a sudden someone wants to play the "respect card." Would he have said the same if the tables were reversed? I think not. Godfrey just needs to sit down somewhere. Better yet, he needs to go practice, because apparently his team sucks butt.

I disagree. What were they to do...take a knee with a whole half to play? Godfrey needs to get over it and the 'Skins should have come to play.

Its a game!
Its competition!
The objective of a game is to outscore your opponent!
What the hell kind of game prevents scoring.
Children's Soccer?
There is no such thing as running up the score!
You score to win!
Are you going to get upset when teams in the NBA outscore opponents 100+ to 70?
Are you going to get upset when teams in the MLB outscore opponents 13-0
Are you going to get upset when teams in the NHL outscore opponents 5-0
GET OVER IT
THE PATRIOTS PLAY TO WIN!
RUNNING UP THE SCORE IS JUST A LAME EXCUSE FOR POOR PLAYING AND POOR SPORTSMANSHIP!
JUST ACCEPT YOUR DEFEAT AND MOVE ON!
THESE ANALYSTS FORGET THAT NOTHING IS EQUAL IN THE GAME....YOU EITHER HAVE IT OR YOU DON'T
PEOPLE WHO ACCUSE THE PATRIOTS OF RUNNING UP THE SCORE HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT COMPETITION AND HAVE NO CLEAR RESPECT FOR COMPETITION
COMPETITION DOES NOT PLAY NICE
THERE A RULES TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD
BUT OVERALL COMEPETITION KNOWS NO EQUALITY
WHAT ABOUT TIGER WOODS
ARE YOU GOING TO ACCUSE HIM OF RUNNING UP THE SCORE
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS RUNNING UP THE SCORE
WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN?
IN FOOTBALL YOUR OFFENSE PRIMARY JOB IS TO SCORE!
BILL BELICHICK'S JOB IS TO CREATE A GAMEPLAN TO WILL ALLOW HIS TEAM TO EXPLOIT THE WEAKNESS OF HIS OPPONENT THUS CREATING SCORES!
