I'm American, but for some reason, my entire life I've felt foreign, like I don't belong here. I look on TV and the majority of those people don't look like me. When I do see people who look like me, they are often portrayed in a negative light. I decided to ask this question, because I'm currently serving in Iraq and I feel the same way over here. I feel alone. There are only a handful of black people here on base, and you begin to feel like an immigrant. Now, I'm not one of those people who can't function around caucasians, however it would be nice to experience the same comfort they seem to experience when 95% of the people they work/live with and see on tv look like them. It shouldn't matter what race people are...says the man who lives in the exclusive white neighborhood and goes to the prodominantly white high school or university? It's human nature to feel more comfortable around people of your own race. Personally, I would prefer it to be evenly populated w/ various races.

Good Advice 'Black Face'! I'm packing my things up right now! You're ignorant. Maybe you feel foreign too...I mean, I'm pretty sure you are the last "subhuman" walking the planet.

You probably feel alone because you have common sense, the ability to think for yourself and you can string together a coherent paragraph. It has nothing to do with race as I have these conversation with my friends of all different colors at least once per week. People who employ basic logic and reason in their every day lives are really becoming a minority and we're all feeling a little like foreigners.

Antje, "to me you are all foreigners?" Are you native American? An Iraqi woman commenting on American soldiers in your village?

The problem you have is up to you to correct. No one else can do that for you. How I feel about myself whether that is inferior or Superior to others around me is up to me . If I want to fit in that to is a personal matter. I do not see myself belonging to anything that is shown on TV either, that however is also a matter of choice, I am American by naturalization this country has been good to me and that is how I feel American, God bless America

I am white and I feel like a foreigner! Of course with me, it's because I don't fit in with society in general.

It has always saddened me that people can't get along no matter what their ethnicity. I served in the military, and was shocked by the level of racism I saw. You would think that people serving together would see each other as equals.

Not being rude but most races usually segregate themselves to their own race. Why do some blacks feel they cannot function around caucasians?

Well, if it makes you feel any better, to me you are all foreigners.
Get over yourself. You are a member of the human race and therefore prone to doubt and uncertainty. Hang out with blind people. They cannot see you. Hang out with egomaniacs. they do not see anyone but themselves.
Be kind and welcoming and polite and everyone will feel good around you.

First of all thanks for your service.

I don't feel foreign, I feel like a minority but in my own country. I agree, it's more fun being in racially mixed places (I live in the SF bay area, we have a great mix here), so maybe when you get out you should like for a mixed place to live.
