Well there are several.
One game i play is Maplestory:
www.maplestory.com
Another game thats good is runescape:
www.runescape.com
Others are dragon fable and adventure quest:
www.battle-on.com
Then theres many other games that you can find if you just type it in google.
A game thats not an MMO but i reccomend is travian.
www.travian.com or www.travian.co.uk - its addictive and fun

Also i'd reccomend getting guild wars. You buy the game and then can play free for the rest of your life. The game is only about £15 and guild wars is a top quality game, purely online and the best MMORPG you'll find.

There are quite a few, especially if you are willing to get into Korean MMOs.

No payment games, or optinal item purchases only:

RF Online - now free with a optional purchase function

Anarchy Online - mostly free, with some expansion packs it takes a fee to pay

Maple Story - A 2D platforming RPG

Ragnarok Online - A classic, several free servers exist

Sword of the New World - A very pretty MMORPG with a twist in it's three-characters-a-person gameplay.

http://ijji.com has several including a relatively new, one with a LOT of crafting posibilities

One time purchase:

Guild Wars - a great game

Just look up "free MMORPG" in google and you'll get pages which do nothing but list free MMORPGs.

It really depends on what kind of MMO you like. Also i'm pretty sure there is no MMO that doesn't use a subscribtion.

World of warcraft is cool but you might not feel like paying for it from month to month. There are free sites where you can play but some are hard to find.
Otherwise try out Archlord, Guildwars, RFonline, Heroes online.
