It gets easier as you get older. It's not that you train yourself so much as you just change.
When you're 25 you care more about your hair and your weight and what people think of you.
When you're 35 you care more about your kids and your job, what you're making for dinner and who's driving the carpool to hockey tonight..
When you're 45 you care more about how damn much longer you've got to work before you can retire. lol.
I don't think we ever stop being hard on ourselves, we just change our priorities.

I think for everyone it's a personal journey. But the one thing i've found to be true no matter who you are is acceptance. You must accept who you are and learn to really like yourself.
Start by being comfortable with the choices you make; don't do anything that you don't feel right about. Also, each day find one positive thing about yourself and look in the mirror and affirm that positive trait, say it out loud! I know how silly that sounds but it DOES work. It can be a physical or personality trait as long as it's positve.
Once you like yourself you tend to be more forgiving of your flaws because you realize that your only human. You know that no matter what's wrong with you or what mistakes you've made, there are so many good things about you too.
This doesn't happen overnight and it takes practice. I also think it gets easier with age because you become more comfortable in your own skin as you get older and realize that mistakes are necessary if we are to learn!
good luck!

Just let yourself get a little mad, then think for one second...whos fault is it? Take the blame and then forgive by asking if you were to do it all again would you make same choices, and generally, you would...then realize if nobody died, your doing well and forgive yourself.

Gee, " religious" people aren't critical of others. Only Christians are critical because Christianity is the only religion that sets standards. There are much worse religions like Hinduism, which teaches to care only about yourself, and humanism, which always makes excuses for bad behavior.

Why would you want to do that? From my perspective, people are already too forgiving of their faults. Society coddles the faultiness of our society instead of fighting to curtail them.
On a personal level, I believe forgiving ones own faults breeds weakness. I focus on building better mental constructs to minimize faults and to attempt to build a better person in the process.
I do realize that you are speaking of not beating yourself up about perceived faults in your character, and that none of us is perfect. I think that the realization of ones faults is critical to identifying those aspects of ourselves that we have power to change. But I also think it's a dangerous thing to become forgiving and even accepting of faults.
The ultimate goal is to build the best person that one can. To become forgiving of faults, in my opinion, is to detract from that goal.
Add: I wish to address the answer that 'Squirrel' gave.
That is precisely the type of answer that ruins a persons ability to see things clearly. There are many people who have found God. To my knowledge, none of them are any more forgiving of their own faults than anyone else. They simply have a method of absolving themselves from the guilt associated with the faults. In fact, Religious persons tend to be even more unforgiving and critical when it comes to personal flaws of character. Especially those that they perceive in others.

If it is difficult to forgive yourself, try forgiving others. When you can forgive everyone else, you will realize that you "ARE" forgiven. By the way I forgive you!!! Peace.
