If a sliding doors are sold as 60", does that mean the finished opening should be 60" or is that the actual width of the doors?

If the opening needs to be a bit bigger than 60", how much bigger?

The door opening (inside the frame) is 60" in your case. The door specification sheet should list the dimensions for the required opening. It's usually around a couple inches bigger than the door measurement, to allow for the frame (for pre-hung doors) and shimming to square it up.

Sliding Door Rough Opening

The only way to be certain of Rough Opening (RO) is to contact the manufacturer or salesman and ask what is the RO for this door. If can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

If new framing, and you are still in doubt, it's better to go too big than too small. That way if the opening is too big you can just add some dead wood to make the opening smaller. If the opening is too small, then you have to make a new header, move the studs over, etc.

But if you can go with a bigger door. The 5-0 sliders are a bit small. Typically when you open the door all the way, with the jamb and the sash of the door, the clear opening isn't much over 2'. If possible go with a 6-0 slider. Just a suggestion.

Try the mirror test. Go to a mirror in your house and then put your index finger up to the mirror so it s touching. If your finger and your reflected finger in the mirror leaves a gap then your safe. But if there isn t a gap...ITS A 2 WAY MIRROR! Leve the place!

The manufacturer should have OD and ID sizes listed. Check their website or your sales rep.
