After the Death of Elizabeth I, who left no heir to the throne, the Scottish king James I of the Stuart house took the throne under the title of King of Great Britain, which was just England and Scotland at the time.

Elizabeth died of natural causes and was not overthrown.

Under the ordinary laws of succession, Mary of Scot was next in line to the English throne after her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, who was childless. In the eyes of many Catholics Elizabeth was illegitimate, making Mary the true heir. She was executed by Queen Elizabeth I in 1587 for treason. Mary's only son, James VI, became the next rightful heir to the British throne, who also had the best claim to the crown, established the "House of Stuart" in England in 1603.
