OPEC sets the price of oil and so drilling won't make any difference. Also without refinery capacity increased where would the oil be processed? This lack of refineries also keeps prices hight. When a CLEAN refinery can be developed and operated people are more likely to accept it in their back yards. That alone would save billions in the cost at the pump. Unfortunately there are those in the oil industry who don't want to spend the money to clean things up because it is not cost effective. Instead they keep things as they are and charge ever increasing prices fattening their wallets by the day.

It is the production rate that drives up the prices, we have a huge oil reseve the US government has amassed over the years. There is no oil shortage, just a shortage in the capacity to mass produce usable petroleum.

It would eventually go down a little but the larger issue is refinery capacity. If we build new refineries we could see prices drop. Here in my state the democrats are already talking about increasing the gas tax- lucky us.

What would the gas price at the pumps be if we weren't dependent on oil period, regardless of where it came from? We don't need new oil, we need to get rid of our addiction to it.

Exactly the same. It would take two years to get the production to the pump.
